What Are the Differences Between Hurricanes, Tsunamis, Cyclones, and Typhoons?

A common question many people often ponder is what the difference is between hurricanes, tsunamis, cyclones, and typhoons. Hurricanes and typhoons are tropical cyclones, and the difference between them is basically nothing save where they occur on earth. Tsunamis are different. Let’s explain.

Cyclones

Cyclones are organized low pressure areas with rotating winds, which includes hurricanes and typhoons. Cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean and eastern Pacific Ocean are called hurricanes. Typhoon is the name of a cyclone in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans.

No matter the type of cyclone, its atmospheric pressure is lowest in its center, and the winds spiral inward toward the center. Most cyclones occur with thunderstorms, though they can also occur in dry, cloudless skies. Plummeting atmospheric pressure is a good sign that one is forming.

If a cyclone occurs over the tropical or subtropical oceans of the earth, it’s called a tropical cyclone. If the winds rotate at a steady 39 miles per hour, the cyclone is a tropical depression. To be classified as a hurricane, the winds must rotate at a steady 74 miles per hour or higher.

Tsunamis

Tsunami is the Japanese word for “storm wave.” Tsunamis are caused by undersea earthquakes, erupting volcanoes or hurricanes far out on the ocean. They are even caused by underwater nuclear detonations. These events lead to the massive and violent displacement of water. Because of this, tsunamis can be extraordinarily destructive. One example is the Boxing Day Tsunami, which struck 14 countries in the Indian Ocean in 2004. This tsunami killed close to a quarter of a million people.
